Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using these treatments need to be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified regain.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

People who have stopped the jabs report a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," described an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
