The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any significant prize-giving event approaches, you'll find a clamor for introducing additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. But it is an essential concession in the world of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games in the world and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier game development, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
