In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Government Consultations Taking Place
In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
