The ex-president's intense urge for payback has swiftly morphed into a structured system. Within the twelve months, the president's rage and impulses have taken on the form of government actions in ways reminiscent to historical authoritarian regimes. Federal figures who fail to comply are immediately removed and succeeded by supporters. Political figures who question him face indictment, trial and sanctions. Adversaries have been categorized under administration orders as “unpatriotic”, “anti-Christian” and “against free markets”, and warned with legal action as “terrorists”.
Government Institutions Restructured
Every instance involving targeting of political opponents and immunity for loyalists exhibits its own distinct characteristics. Yet, regardless of their specific form, they exemplify examples of what has developed as a calculated method. These incidents are not coincidental. Trump's removal of DoJ attorneys and FBI agents, coupled with his installation of devotees in key positions, began swiftly, soon assumed a consistency, and has now been molded into a system. DoJ and the law enforcement agency have been transformed into partisan agencies under Trump's explicit direction to implement his wishes. Injustice has been rendered standard. It represents the apparatus of revenge.
Administration is more concerned with penalizing the chief's alleged opponents than they are with safeguarding our country's safety.
Within the System
The origin of this mechanism has been exposed in the legal complaint of several previous high-ranking law enforcement agents lodged in September in the US district court in Washington against top official a senior appointee and attorney general Pam Bondi for wrongful dismissal in “a effort of payback against Plaintiffs for what the accused considered to be a refusal to demonstrate sufficient political loyalty”. In the complaint that Brian Driscoll, the former acting FBI director, recounts a discussion in which Patel “publicly acknowledged the illegality of his actions”.
Driscoll had sought to shield agency personnel from being dismissed, the lawsuit states. He informed him that “they” – understood by the official to be the presidential administration and justice department – had directed him to fire all those who they identified as having participated in a law enforcement case against Trump. The complaint adds: “Patel clarified that he had to fire the personnel his leaders told him to remove, because his ability to retain his own position was contingent on the ouster of the agents who were involved in cases involving the chief executive. He noted that there was nothing he or him could do to stop these or any other terminations, because ‘the bureau attempted to place the leader in detention and he recalls it clearly.’” After he informed the director he was disregarding the bureau's own policies, the director reportedly said “he understood that and he was aware the nature of the summary firings were almost certainly illegal”.
Broad Consequences
After the director's claimed confession to the official, the DoJ and the FBI have been dismantled and reorganized for his revenge apparatus. Multiple of the bureau's high-ranking agents were fired or forced out in the early weeks of the administration. About thousands of lawyers at the justice department have agreed to a “deferred resignation program”. A minimum of multiple federal prosecutors, among them those in the southern district of New York, quit in objection over what they considered as ideological pressure in abandoning the legal action against the city leader, the mayor, in exchange for his collaboration with his ICE detentions of migrants. The ethics division of the justice department, which oversees misconduct investigations, has been diminished to a handful of lawyers. The civil rights division has been severely reduced: 70% of its employees has departed. 33% of top officials at the justice department have left. The unit enforcing environmental law has experienced the exit of a majority its leadership.
Favors and Sanctions
Concerning the mayor's situation, the interim prosecutor for the federal division, Danielle Sassoon, quit in dissent against what she labeled as the “exchange”. The border official, his “immigration leader,” was present as the agent with the mayor on a media outlet to announce: “If he doesn't come through, I'll be back in New York City.”. Additionally, another figure, previously the senior DoJ official and a ex-lawyer, who arranged the deal, was granted an court role, a likely stepping stone to the judicial branch.
The president's immunity for offenses carried out while in government, provided by the extraordinary ruling of the Republican majority on the judicial body, thus blocking his legal action over the Capitol riot and safeguarding his electoral prospects for the 2024 election, is the basis on which he relies to defend his supporters. Given this protection, he has been empowered to enable corruption. The consequence of the court judgment permeates his presidency and the political party completely. The legal case has metastasized. As Richard Nixon's administration lawyer John Dean remarked about the Watergate
